FLARM and ADS-L

Skytraxx: FLARM and Now ADS-L – Your Upgrade for Safer Flights

Dear Pilots,

Good news: Your Skytraxx variometer is now even more capable! With the new FLARM function (transmit and receive, called AWARE) and support for ADS-L OUT, you are fully prepared for the future of flying. These technologies not only provide enhanced safety but also help you keep track of the increasingly crowded airspace. We also want to explain how U-Space and ADS-L bring drones into the picture.

Aware vs. Beacon FLARM: The Difference

FLARM is a collision warning system from Switzerland that has different technical levels requiring a license. It was specifically developed for light aircraft, helicopters, paragliders, and especially for gliders.

Beacon FLARM:

This is the most basic, yet crucial level. Your device transmits your position data so that other FLARM-equipped aircraft can see you. However, you do not receive the position data of other FLARM devices, meaning you cannot directly see the position of other FLARM-equipped aircraft on your display. Every FANET+-enabled Skytraxx is equipped with this model by default.

Note: Your Skytraxx has other ways to display aircraft, such as via FANET or SafeSky.

Aware FLARM:

With AWARE FLARM, your Skytraxx goes a step further: it receives signals from other FLARM-equipped aircraft and displays them in real-time on your screen. This means you can see where other FLARM-equipped aircraft are located.

What are the benefits for you?

Increased Safety: You can identify potential conflicts in mixed operations early and react accordingly.

Situational Awareness: You get a more comprehensive view of who is nearby – especially useful for other aircraft like helicopters or gliders.

ADS-L: Visibility in Modern Airspace

Another major new feature is the support for ADS-L (Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Light) in your Skytraxx. But what exactly is ADS-L, and why is it important?

ADS-L is a simplified version of ADS-B, a system widely used in commercial aviation. ADS-L focuses on transmitting data such as position and speed and is specifically designed for light aviation.

Skytraxx is one of the three main developers of the protocol commissioned by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). This allowed us to ensure that specific requirements for paragliders and hang gliders were taken into account and that there are no restrictions for our airsport.

How does ADS-L work?

Your Skytraxx automatically transmits your position data so that ground stations and other systems can track your position and relay it to drones.

Note: ADS-L OUT does not receive data from other aircraft.

U-Space: The New Airspace for Drones

ADS-L also plays a key role in the concept of U-Space, a new air traffic system specifically for integrating drones. U-Space creates a digital infrastructure that allows drones to operate safely and efficiently alongside manned aircraft.

What is U-Space?

U-Space is a reserved airspace intended for drone flights at low altitudes, for example for package deliveries or surveillance missions. Technologies like ADS-L enable the coexistence of drones and manned aircraft.

How does this affect you as a pilot?

Visibility to Drones: ADS-L ensures that you are visible to drones and their control systems.

Safety Advantage: Especially in lower airspaces where drones are becoming more common, you are visible to automated U-Space systems, thus avoiding conflicts.

Why These Innovations Matter

Airspace is becoming increasingly crowded with both manned and unmanned aircraft. With ADS-L, you are well-prepared to navigate safely in this new environment. You can ensure that you are always visible to autonomous drones.

Conclusion: Fly Safely and Be Ready for the Future with Skytraxx

The Skytraxx variometer combines FLARM (aware) and ADS-L (out) to provide you with safety and clarity in modern airspace:

AWARE FLARM: Transmitting and NEW: Receiving and displaying other FLARM participants in your vicinity without intermediaries.

ADS-L: Visibility for other aircraft – whether manned or unmanned, and for flying in the newly created U-Space airspace with air sports equipment.

Prepare yourself for the future of flying – your Skytraxx is now your key to greater safety in the skies!
